Here is what other Pro's are saying:

tables and there where a thousand magicians performing, one for each table,
all the people would want to be at Carl's table...including the other 999
magicians. Carl is that good."
-Joe Monti

and the tips you imparted regarding booking and working restaurants was the
best compilation of clearly workable ideas that I’ve ever encountered!”
-Paul W. Cummins
"The advice is excellent, and is the kind of
information that can only be obtained through experience. If your desire
is to do restaurant magic, this information is invaluable. In fact, Carl

material used regularly to "wow" both the Hollywood celebrity crowd
and the high-end Hawaiian tourist trade."
-Dan Garrett
"I like them both! It's always a pleasure to
see stuff that's not pipe dreams and closet magic. This is clearly material
and advice from a performing magician who knows his job!"
-Jarle Leirpoll

since moving to the Reno area in 1981 and you showed me a thing or two...

'Making A Living Performing Close-Up Magic'
“Super
practical and extremely high impact close-up magic! You’re gonna like
this guy - all his magic is super visual, super funny (yes, tons of corny
lines!), and most of all realistic for the walk-around performer (translation
- just about everything works out of the pockets). Carl kicks it off with
one of my favorites,
Gregory Wilson’s Dishonest Abe. This is the growing coin plot as a regular penny grows to a silver dollar size penny and then climaxes by exploding into a 3” jumbo penny. Carl brings thoughtful nuances to this marketed effect and his jumbo production at the end fooled me hard (despite the fact I’ve performed this routine as my opener for the past 3 years!)
Déjà vu - Swain’s airmail card combined with the Two Ton Transpo. Climaxes with the Sankey idea of a card appearing on a paper clip that’s been in full view the entire time. Carl also tosses in some great ideas on maintaining a two-card stack.
The World Famous Two Coin Trick - Hopping Half without having 40 bucks ‘hop’ out of your pocket - he does it with real coins! The coins can be examined at the beginning without having to sacrifice anything visually during the routine.
You Don’t Know Jack - Another line I use incessantly. This time it’s the title for Carl’s version of Mike Close’s Frog Prince. If you don’t already perform this, you’ll want to start. Carl has brought some great ideas to the table for this great “non card” card trick.
Amazing - You’ll fast forward to the explanation.
Picture Perfect - The selected cards develop on two blank cards.
Beanie Weenies - The cup a ball routine with a empty can of beans - they’re “has beans!””
-The MagicSmith
The tape also contains 25 minutes of great marketing ideas, how to approach a table, tips, how to get a restaurant gig, how to create your own close-up magic venue, and much more!
You can't go wrong with Carl Andrews. His experience in working walk around and resort areas are now available to you. The first part of this video is Carl's ingenious and entertaining routines he uses everyday, shown then taught. The second half of the video is worth a $1000.00 or more to the serious magician in this field. Carl pulls up a barstool and gives a lecture on getting work in restaurants, walk around, and other venues. He even goes into teaching you how to make venues where none exsisted before. - e-magicstore.com
Really liked the tape, the routines and advice are superb.
Carl Andrews, Jr. is a consummate professional and here are seven snappy routines developed and tested under fire in real life performance.
'The Jumbo Coin' is an improved handling of Gregory Wilson's 'Dishonest Abe.' 'Deja vu' is a killer combination of the Slop Shuffle and impossible location. 'The world famous two coin trick' is a no-gimmick Hopping Half that starts and ends clean. 'You don't know Jack' is a cut-to-the-chase version of Mike Close's superb 'Frog Prince,' made totally practical for table work at a restaurant or party. 'Amazing' is a two-card revelation-location using a Steve Draun Peek. 'Picture Perfect' is a no-tin version of Bert Allerton's Aspirin Tin. And, finally, 'Beanie Weenies' is a one-punch after another one cup routine with a solid climax that has to close any close-up set.
In addition to the fact that each effect is a guaranteed layman stunner, you should know that Carl tips how you reset each for instant repetition at the next table. Best of all, each is totally practical for real world performing conditions with no bad angles, no difficult handling, easy-to-follow plots, and all move along rapidly from start to climax. Only 'Beanie Weenies' requires that you sit at a table.
Perhaps most important of all, there is some of the most straight-from-the shoulder practical advice I have seen on making a living with close-up magic. His tips on booking and working restaurants are pure gold. PRW
Magic Talks Reviews by John Evernden:
This is a new videotape by Carl Andrews, Jr. Carl lives and performs in Hawaii, and has lectured at the last three IBM conventions held each year in Hawaii in March. He is an accomplished professional, with lots of experience in walk around, table-hopping, and magic theatre. This tape deals primarily with table-hopping in restaurants, and how to build and maintain a reputation performing this type of magic.
Carl begins the tape with an hour of performance and teaching of several of his pet routines he uses for his work. Effective routines with cards, coins, and even 'Beanie Weenies'. Most of these routines are adapted from commercially available routines marketed by other magicians, and he gives credit to the originator. However, the focus of presenting these routines is the quick, lively presentations he has come up with, specifically for table-hopping situations. As good as these routines are, the best information found on this tape, in my opinion, is in the last 25 minutes, titled simply 'Tips'. In this segment Carl sits on a stool, with notes in hand, and tells you all you need to know about this particular area of professional magic.
The information he gives is really excellent, straight forward, real world answers to all your questions. Why he does restaurant work, how he chooses restaurants which will serve his needs, how to approach the management and make his pitch. He also gives specific details on how he handles scheduling between other bookings obtained from his restaurant work, promotion within the restaurant, how to work with the staff to make his performances smooth and enjoyable, and even what to do with time when business at the venue are slow. How to approach a table, how to work the table, how to handle tips, and establish contacts for work outside the restaurant. And even tips on how to use magic theatre to promote his close-up magic and bring in more customers to the restaurant or hotel in which he is working.
The tape is not fancy, and at times during the teaching portions, one would wish for an extra camera or a closer shot on occasion. However, the photographic and sound quality are excellent, the performance and teaching are excellent, and the tips section is even better than that. If you have wanted to do table-hopping, have read all the latest books on the subject, but found yourself still wondering how you actually find a good restaurant, sell yourself, and handle the minute details of actually doing this kind of work, Carl's video will provide straight forward answers to most of your questions, and give you the courage to get out there and do it.
Highly recommended
I’d like to pass on some information about a book and video that you should REALLY check into.... the book is entitled “Making a Living In Magic Performing at Restaurants and Hotels” and the video is entitled “Making a Living Performing Close-Up Magic”. Both are by Carl Andrews, Jr. from Hawaii. I do not have anything to do with either project other than thinking that these are worth everyone’s attention. Both are SUPERB and are definitely on my top ten GREAT purchase list for quite some time.
I bought the book and manuscript initially for the material but let me tell you... it’s a whole lot more. There is some of THE best advice I’ve heard in a long time (and I’ve been doing table and strolling magic for 19 years). AND the material is out of this world... VERY practical, VERY usable, VERY strong, and VERY good.
My favorite items from the book and video that I’ve added to my working repertoire are “Deja Vu” (a great routine combining ideas of Jim Swain’s “Airmail Card” and a wonderful Jay Sankey idea), “You Don’t Know Jack” (a very practical and strong version of Mike Close’s superb “Frog Prince” effect), Flash (it reads easy but TRUST me ... it plays VERY strong), and Carl’s handling of Greg Wilson’s “Dishonest Abe” which is a great opener. There are several other very strong items on the video and in the book (GET BOTH as there are 3 effects in the book that are not on tape and 2 effects on the tape that are not in the book. There is some repetition but I think the book and tape compliment each other).
Don’t even hesitate... as you won’t be sorry. This stuff is SUPERB.
I predict the book and video will be huge sellers due to the amount of great, workable material and the superb advice.

From Brad Burt's Magic Shop ‘The Strolling Magician Video by Carl Andrews’:
Carl Andrews is one of the hottest magicians out there performing in the real world for real money. He is successful at it. What is cool about that is that Carl has been letting the rest of us have the advantage of what he has learned in a variety of close-up venues. Carl's latest release is a full blown expose of the Strolling Magic style of performance. He tells you how to get the business; How to Introduce Yourself; What Type of Material to Perform; What to Wear; and a whole lot more. Carl also give performances of some of his favorite routines and tells you where to find them. This is NOT a trick tape, but if you want to make money doing close-up this is a first rate resource. Recommended!
From Denny and Lee's Magic Shop in Baltimore:
Strolling Magician Carl Andrews is straight on. Learn How to Get into the Strolling Business. Be informed that this is performance only. This is a business video to teach the business of strolling magic and not a trick teaching video. Carl will give sources for his material should you desire to perform these effects. Carl has lectured here at this studio and I can say that if you want to earn money as a strolling magician, this video is tops!!!
'No Jacket Required'- MagicTalk Reviews

Being familiar with Carl's other two videos and book, I just knew this video would be full of great, practical material. I was not disappointed. It is nice to get material from a magician who has who has used and tested the effects in real world situations before passing it on in a video.
I think that is what I like most about this video. The fact that Carl has tried and perfected the material for real people in the exact situations that it is meant to be used... strolling. Another nice touch is that you get to see Carl perform the material at the resort that he works at regularly in Maui. You get to see the effects performed and you get to see the real reactions. No studio. The explanations are as clear as they could possibly be. Shot in a studio with great camera work and every effect carefully explained with Carl's personal tips and thoughts on each effect.
The effects:
Pair o' dice
This is one of Carl's effects that magicians all over the works have been
begging him to tip. I was very happy to see this one on the tape. The 'move'
will take some practice, but it is well worth the time and effort. A great
strolling effect, all you need is a un-gaffed pair of dice.
Ain't No Mo
This one is my favorite. I recently performed this one on a local TV show.
It is the perfect sponge ball routine with some great patter to boot! The
effect is surprising to the spectator, the magic happens in their hands, it
is just as strong for kids as it is for adults, it packs small, and the props
cost almost nothing. Hard to beat if you ask me.
Black Jack
You offer to teach your spectator to play Blackjack. You do just that while
finding a selected card with a surprising transpo. The set up is so simple
that you could do it in a second in front of the spectator.
B.S. 101
A real funny way to answer the question 'show me a trick' The end of the routine
uses Daryl's 'Hot Shot Cut' which is a difficult move. But Carl does show
the move in the explanation section.
Carl's Card On Ceiling
Carl's version of the Card on Ceiling. Easy handling and enjoyable patter.
Double Scotch and Soda with
a Twist
This is another that I really liked. It is an un-gaffed Scotch and Soda with
the surprise of two completely different coins at the end in the spectators’
hand. The handling is not at al difficult and the routine is a lot of fun.
Sweet & Slow
A great restaurant routine. A sugar packet is emptied and the sugar is poured
out. The packet is restored with more of Carl's great patter.
Hula-Fusion
A great couples routine. A version of the anniversary waltz trick, but really
simplified and can be done 'impromptu' Very strong for couples, and a sure
tip getter!
Lei'd Back
A great effect for the kids. You notice that the tag in a Childs shirt is
sticking out and offer to tuck it in. But when you do, you end up removing
a very long streamer much to the Childs surprise. The streamer is maid into
a Hawaiian Lei and is given to the child. A great and inexpensive give away.
Practical, usable material that any close-up or strolling magician will get a lot of use out of. Highly recommended. -- MagicTalk Reviews
'No Jacket Required' - The Linking Ring Magazine
This videotape contains some
super close up effects that Carl uses regularly
at a restaurant in Hawaii. All of the effects fit in your pockets, are easily
reset, and can be performed without a jacket. Perfect for restaurant workers
or for those that just want to travel light and be prepared to do magic
apparently impromptu. It was hard to pick my favorite from the nine routines
since each of them is very entertaining and involve the spectator.
This tape has some really good
routines that you will use if you perform
close-up. Carl performs all of the effects before a live audience at several
tables in the restaurant, then the last part of the tape consists of very
good and detailed explanations of each routine. The only flaw in the tape
I
reviewed was a one-and-a-half-minute segment at the beginning of the tape
where the video and sound was garbled in the manufacturing process. That
problem may well not exist on all tapes, but it won't deter me from
purchasing it. Highly recommended MG
<>'Magic from Maui' Book Review from Visions Online Magic Journal
‘Magic
from Maui’
by Carl Andrews
Available from your favorite dealer
In a Blink: 10 out of 10
If you've just started out working in restaurants or strolling at parties,
or are thinking about working in those venues, or want to add some other
effects to your repertoire to add variety to your act, buy Carl Andrews'
book, ‘Magic
from Maui’. You have to have it. That's it. End of review.
Okay, so that's not the end of the review. But what I said wasn't hype, either: this really is one book anyone having any connection with restaurant or strolling work cannot be without.
For those just starting out or thinking of heading that way, Andrews' gives a smorgasbord of tips and advice on working in the Real World. From marketing advice to planning to sample letters to getting more work to simply walking up to a table, Andrews gives us sound, practical advice based on his own experiences Out There. Not to mention his enthusiasm for working those venues is contagious -- I almost started putting together my own promotional package for restaurants after reading this.
You say you've been around the block a few times and know the ropes? Andrews may surprise you. Some of tips and tricks when it comes to the business side of things may be news to you or things you may want to adapt to what you're already doing now. Andrews' experience is, after all, long and solid; there's things to learn from him in this area and others.
It's that ‘others’ which
really resounded with your humble editor: the material Andrews uses for
his work, the real tricks of the trade. And, like the rest of the book,
Andrews doesn't disappoint.
He also doesn't leave anything out. Here you'll find cards and coins and dice
and cups and balls -- thirty tricks in all -- all tailored to work within
the strolling environment, all altered to get rid of trips to the bathroom
for resets, strange angle problems, and the like. In other words, these are
true tools for the craftsman by a craftsman.
Take his ‘Three Coins Across’, which I had heard of but never seen. Simple, straight, forward, and beautiful, it also takes advantage of spectator interaction to make it a winner. Andrews' ‘Pair o' Dice’ routine -- his re-working of the Dr. Sacks' Dice Trick -- won a place in my act as soon as I read it due to the smooth handling and the logic (and a funny running gag). For the Cups and Balls crowd (which we're all in, I think), he covers a ‘one-cup’ routine, a ‘two-cup’ routine, and even a ‘Beanie-Weenie-can’ routine, all very slick and very streamlined. Now, throw in a slick, gimmickless handling for the ‘Hopping Half’ theme, a devilish coin tranposition with a suprising transformation ending, and a clever and entertaining -- and gimmick-free -- version of ‘Anniversary Waltz’, and you've got an idea of what you're going to find here. And I haven't even mentioned the origami frog yet.
‘Magic from Maui’ is one
of those rarest of rarities: it's a book that delivers the goods and then
some. Although I hesitate to say it, this is one book you could build an
entire act from, then build your business -- and your reputation -- from
that act. And Andrews even helps you out doing that.
This is an absolute winner.
‘Magic from Maui ‘ by Carl Andrews
In a Blink: 10 Out of 10
Material: 10
Cards, coins, cups and balls, dice... Andrews has it all here. And you can
forget about things like huge resets or angles or carrying around half of
the local hardware store in your pants pocket. Andrews material is solid,
craftsman-like stuff for the strolling and restaurant magician. And don't
even get me started about the wealth of great, common-sense material on working
restaurants in the first place.
Quality of Instruction: 10
Andrews' writing style is clear and concise and with a delightful eye on the
performing nuances; it's extremely easy to read and learn from. There'll be
no problems learning the effects from Andrews' work.
Illustrations: 10
Line drawings by Tony Dunn which are wonderfully done and beautifully placed,
complimenting and Andrews' writing superbly.
Presentation: 10
This is what Andrews' material is all about. Remember, we're talking basically
about ‘hit-and-run’ magic when you're talking table-hopping
and strolling, and to pull that off presentations have to be short, crisp,
and easily remembered. Andrews' presentations are full of that thinking,
pulling the spectator into the trick as quickly as possible and keeping
everything nice and visual besides.
Originality: 10
Yes, there are some takes on the classics here, but Andrews' does a superlative
job taking those and adapting them to his way of doing magic. From the
classic
‘Hopping Half’ and ‘Scotch and Soda’ plots (done
without gimmicks) to a short and startling Cups and Balls routine to a clever
approach to Card-on-Ceiling, Andrews fills his work with what works for him.
Luckily, these original takes -- and the thoroughly original work besides
-- will work for most anyone, anywhere.

Andrews Table Hopping Cups and Balls: A Review from MagicTalk.com
Posted By: Steve V'
Date: Saturday, 21 September 2002, at 10:03 p.m.
Carl Andrews, for those not 'in the know', is one of the gentlemen who started Illusions restaurant and is one of the greats of restaurant and strolling magic. Carl also does comedy and stand up magic as well and presently works for one of the major cruise lines having left a top resort in Hawaii after a number of years. His previous videos, the latest before now being No Jacket Required, are really of value to close up and in particular restaurant magicians. Carl really knows what magic works and has performed for thousands upon thousands of spectators.
Table Hopping Cups & Balls is another product out of MagicSmith and is another winner (they also brought us Paul Greens in the Trenches and Greg Wilsons material). The production level is outstanding, I can't complain about the camera work or the sound, a rarity for me. It is only on DVD (I may be wrong but doubt it) and I liked the format. First you get a live performance for a lovely blond and some other humans that I didn't notice. The cups and balls are followed by a performance of Carls great Ain't No Mo (also explained on this DVD as well as on No Jacket Required), a wonderful sponge ball routine. Next we get a full and well done explanation of the cups and balls and the sponge routine from a front view, then an additional explanation with a rear view, closing with a stage (meaning not in front of spectators) performance of the routines. I really liked how it was put together. Carl knows how to explain effects and you will learn how do do this material from this DVD.
The Routine: The routine is done with two cups rather than the normally seen three or the single cup as done by David Williamson. I really liked this routine and feel that from a spectators perspective the two cups are easier to follow and extremely entertaining. The routine consist of many of the normal moves found in cups and balls (including the Charlie Miller drop move which I think does work and doesn't, if done right, give anything away). Carl does add some handling changes of his own and his own ideas on performing. Unlike many who change some effects for change sake Carls additions and subtlities improve the presentation. He learned and developed this routine under fire and it shows, he is a master. The final load is sponge balls, those used in his Aint No Mo' routine and this makes perfect sense and is a great flow. Carl points out that people look at the final load the same if it's fruit or sponge balls, it is the fact it's something different that gets them (the basic routine is done with those great lil' baseballs). Carl is right. To produce anything else would dilute the performance and not make sense at all in a table side performance or strolling situation.
I think this is one of the best cups and balls routines I've seen. I think this is absolutely the best one for performing table side or at the bar for a few folks in front of you. Much respect to Vernon and Ammar etc. but I'm looking at this from the perspective of a non-magician (hard but I can handle it) and while I can applaud the wonderful Dai Vernon wand spin (Wes James, forgive me since I forgot who else should be credited for the spin), which isn't used here, for real people the goal is to entertain and mystify and Carl does it.
If you want a really good cups and balls routine you WILL do and also want a cool sponge routine get hold of carl at carlandrews.com, magismith.com, or your favorite dealer. I think you'll be very surprised.
Oh, I do have one problem with Carl. Carl is a grandfather and he looks like he is about 30 years old. He stopped aging and that can be embarrasing for his wife and kids when they all start looking older than him. Carl may want to consider a face-drop to get some wrinkles and adding a bit more gray to his hair. Other than this I have no complaints.
Very highly recommended.
A review posted on The Magic Cafe forum by Darrin Cook
I like the tape and recommend it. The routine is simple and the props are compact.
I'd never done the cups and balls before because the props are too bulky (I do walk-around at a restaurant.) One big name magician looks like he is carting around a disassembled weight set in his suit, with three large, solid metal cups, four balls and large fruit loads. Carl's routine packs into one pocket with no odd bulges.
Let me add that I went to Wal-Mart and got a set of 4 sauce cups for two dollars. I use two of those cups, which are made out of silver metal and stand about one-and-a-half inches high. I dented the tops to make them concave so that a ball will rest on the top without rolling off. With Carl's DVD, three sponge balls, the crochet balls, and the two sauce cups, there isn't a cheaper, more compact, and in my opinion, more practical cups and balls routine.
I performed the routine for
the first time this last Friday. One audience included two
hyperactive boys who have seen my entire repertoire, and it is very evident
when they are not being entertained. (In fact, I wasn't looking forward to
performing at their table.) Andrews' routine drew the best reaction of anything
I've ever done for them, the sort of thing that made me think to myself, This
one's a keeper.
